In 1891, William Marsh Rice, a representative who made his fortune contracted the William Marsh Rice Institute for the Advancement of Literature, Science, and Art. The school's shades of blue and dim, in spite of not being picked by Rice, are accepted to be founded on the way that he made his fortune exchanging with both the North (blue) and South (dim) amid the Civil War.
